Our Church Officers: Elders and Deacons
As a part of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., we elect men and women from our active membership and ordain them to leadership roles and responsibilities in our church. Ordination is the act by which the church sets apart persons to be presbyters (ministers of the Word and Sacrament), elders or deacons. The Book of Order, a part of our PCUSA Constitution, outlines the offices of elder and deacon. Elected by the congregation, each elder and deacon serves a three year rotation, beginning in January. The number of elders and deacons is determined by the size of our congregation and includes both a youth elder and a youth deacon. The body of elders is called the Session. Elders serve as leaders in the government and discipline of our church as well as well as having responsibilities for the life of the Church at large. It is the duty of elders, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of our congregation. Those duties which all Christians are bound to perform by the law of love are especially incumbent upon elders because of their calling to office and are to be fulfilled by them as official responsibilities. Our elders serve on ministry teams and administrative committees within the church including worship, education, mission, business and human resources. These groups typically met on the second Monday of each month, Kirk Night. The following Monday, our Session meets to conduct church business. |

Deacons: The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. The work of deacons is best done by men and women who are gifted with compassion and empathy. Ministering to those who are in need, to the sick, to the lonely and to anyone who may be in distress both within the Crossroads community and beyond is the primary focus of deacons. At Crossroads, each deacon is assigned families within a geographical zone and are encouraged to be in relationship with them on a regular and frequent basis. |
